October 2024 Update: Pointe Santo de Sanibel fared very well during Hurricanes Helene (September) and Milton (October). There were some minor delays related to property clean-up and power restoration, but the unit was not damaged and the rebuild continues!
Hurricane Ian had a devastating impact on Sanibel Island when it made landfall on September 28, 2022, as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph and a storm surge of up to 15 feet. The Sanibel Causeway, the only road connecting the island to the mainland, was severely damaged, cutting off access to the island. Remarkably, the Causeway was reopened just three weeks after Hurricane Ian struck. The island suffered extensive damage and has been rebuilding since late 2022.
The original condo (Unit C2) pictured below suffered extensive damage from the storm, but, fortunately, the buildings maintained their structural integrity.
The unit was completely gutted after Hurricane Ian. Following our purchase in 2023, we began a 100% custom rebuild of the condo inward from the concrete walls. And so began the construction of Our Sanibel Dream!
Progress has been slow, but steady, and we have kept our eyes on the prize that awaits at the end of this process! Completion of Our Sanibel Dream is expected in December 2024. Reconstruction of the community pool and whirlpool are underway and the tennis and pickleball courts have been completed! Pointe Santo is moving forward with plans for a brand new expanded pool deck & pavilion as well as a new office and community building between the B and C buildings.
